Garment Storage Basics Learning from the Ancient Egyptians Like all natural things, textiles begin to deteriorate from the moment they are made. Even man-made fabrics are not immune to the ravages of time. The only thing you can hope to do is slow this process to an acceptable level. Happily, by following a few basic guidelines, this can be achieved to a very satisfactory degree. How satisfactory? To cite an example, garments recovered from the burial chambers of pyramids have survived in surprisingly good condition after thousands of years. Either by accident or design, the Ancient Egyptians had hit on just the right combination of environmental conditions for almost perfect preservation. While we are not suggesting that it would be
easy (or practical) to duplicate the success of the Ancient Egyptians, examining the
processes involved and comparing them to our current knowledge should prove both
interesting and instructive.So what are the conditions inside a pyramid?
